Now with 100% more Wellington
I’ve recently made a major move in my life, and have taken up a new position at a start-up company based in Silicon Welly (Wellington, New Zealand) and filled to the brim with really smart and top people (and growing rapidly).
I’ve actually been in the city for the last month (since early January). I’ve delayed posting about my move for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, the first couple of weeks were complete shit. I lived in a crappy hostel which perched over the motorway, a place where old people went to die, and those down on their luck or incapable of anything better spent their days. On my first night I received a written threat from the next door neighbour: the guy apparently liked to talk on his CB radio till the early hours, which regularly kept his neighbouring tenants awake. This being my first night the hostel manager decided to tell him to keep it down. I was wearing earplugs because I couldn’t sleep with the road noise from the motorway, so I didn’t notice at all – so with no effort on my part I managed to make an enemy within a few hours of arriving.
The room itself was tiny, dingy and musty. It felt like the room had only become available because the previous tenant had died in it.
Anywho, my point is I felt it’d be a better idea to leave it a few weeks while I settled in an found a more amiable flat environment before expressing opinions on the place.
Secondly is that the new company I’m working for, Xero, is still in beta testing and I didn’t want to jeopardise our release or product by talking about any sensitive points. The product is something strikingly new for New Zealand, and will be revolutionary for many of our clients. It’s a very exciting time.
A lot of my previous posts have been quite work related, so hopefully after we launch (shortly) I’ll be back into a more regular posting schedule. I look forward to writing about some of the great stuff the team’s been working on.
